Maude Jane Delap (1866 - 1953) was an Irish self-taught marine biologist from Donegal, who made it her life’s work to study the life cycle of various underwater specimen off the coast of Valentia Island in Kerry. She was a pioneer in her field and a vital contributor to Ireland’s maritime heritage. I wrote this poem in her honour; it was later the overall winner of the 2019 Write by the Sea Kilmore Quay writing competition. My thanks are to Richard Hayes of the Waterford Institute for selecting it.
